This Inglewood Foster's Freeze is the chain's first stand, built in 1946. There must have originally been a neon sign that was replaced with this plastic one at some point. Officially named Foster's Old Fashion Freeze, this was the first soft serve ice cream chain in CA, founded by George Foster. For more, see these websites: 1 and 2.
The San Luis Obispo location still retains the original neon sign. It is partially lit at night. For more, see this website. |

This Los Angeles Foster's Freeze features another intact old neon sign.
This second Los Angeles Foster's Freeze sign shown above is from the same era but now stripped of neon. The ice cream portion of the cone looks like it might have been backlit at one time. This original stand probably had scripted lettering around the roofline like this one in Torrance, CA. |

The Gilroy Foster's Freeze has an updated building but still has the original neon sign. The sign's "Old Fashion" lettering has been removed.
The Paso Robles Foster's Freeze features an updated building and this sign. I believe the sign is partially lit at night. The "Hamburgers" and "Drive Thru" pieces must have been added later. |

| The Berkeley Foster's Freeze sign appears to have been reworked at some point. It is lit at night. For more, see this website. |

| The San Jose Foster's Freeze appears to be from the 1950s. The neon sign looks like it was recently restored. For more, see this website. |

| The Dinuba, Selma and Santa Cruz locations feature later plastic signs. I'd love to know when they made the switch. The mascot on the Selma sign has red cheeks. In 2009, this Santa Cruz location became "Taqueria Agave" and the sign was removed. |

| This Sebastopol Foster's Freeze appears to be from the 1950s. In addition to the script Foster's lettering around the roofline, there are these cute metal additions. I have not seen them at any other location. |

| This Foster's Freeze location features an original looking building. Note the white lettering of "Old Fashion" on this plastic sign. The neon cone sign is installed on the side of the building. It is protected by plastic and most likely came from a Tastee-Freez stand. For more, see these websites: 1 and 2. |

The Los Angeles and Santa Monica signs are in great shape but have apparently faded. I believe the character on all of these Foster's signs was always yellow with red cheeks.
The Placerville location opened in 1952 and closed in 2010. It's not known whether the place will be sold and reopen or if the sign will be removed. [photo thanks Doug Noble] |

| This Burbank location appears to be from the 1950s. The sign looks a little later. |
