NEW JERSEY: ICE CREAM

Nagle's Apothecary Café
Ocean Grove, NJ

Nagle's Apothecary Café opened in 1901 as a pharmacy/ice cream parlor. It is now a full-scale restaurant. The interior features the original mahogany pharmacy cases. There is also an ice cream take-out window. For more, see this website.

Richman's Ice Cream
Sharptown, NJ

Richman's Ice Cream started out as Richman's Dairy in 1894. The cast concrete Art Deco façade is from 1947. There was a smaller location in Sharptown but that is gone. The ice cream is not actually made here any more but it is damned good anyway and there is also a full-scale restaurant.

Holsten's Brookdale Confectionery
Bloomfield, NJ

Holsten's Brookdale Confectionery opened in 1939. This ice cream parlor features homemade ice cream and candies, as well as sandwiches and other food. For more, see these websites: 1 and 2.

Olympia Dairy Bar
Carneys Point, NJ

The Olympia Dairy Bar opened in 1956 and retains the original signage and building. For more, see this website.

Cliff's Dairy Maid
Ledgewood, NJ
Strollo's Lighthouse
Point Pleasant, NJ

Cliff's Dairy Maid, featuring homemade ice cream, opened in 1975. There has been an ice cream stand here since the mid-1940s.

Strollo's Lighthouse began selling Italian ices in 1976. I believe this building with the lighthouse on the roof is the most recently built of their three locations. Another of their locations, in Red Bank, NJ, occupies a former gas station. For more, see their website.

Polar Bear Ice Cream
Keansburg, NJ

Polar Bear Ice Cream has been here since at least the 1960s. The giant ice cream cone on the roof is very similar to several in New York.
