Tastee-Freez started selling soft-serve ice cream in 1950 and had 1,600 locations by 1965. The company now has locations in 36 states. Most of the walk-up stands have been remodeled and have become full-scale fast food operations. For more about Tastee-Freez, see their website.

The Dixie Soft Serve was a former Tastee-Freez. The freestanding sign is unusual though.

Miller's Five Drive-in looks to be a former Tastee-Freez. It has been Miller's since at least the 1960s. For more, see their website. [photo/info thanks Glenda Campbell]

Whipple Dari Drive-In
Canton, OH
S&K Dairy Cup
Hillsboro, OH

The Whipple Dari Drive-In is another former Tastee-Freez.

The S&K Dairy Cup has occupied this former Tastee-Freez since around 2009. Before the S&K, it was known as the Fiftee-Freez. For more, see this website.

Kline's Freeze
Manassas, VA

Kline's Freeze was originally a Tastee-Freez. It has been Kline's since 1965. For more, see this website.

Hasty Freez
Albany, OR

This Hasty Freez opened in 1952 as a Tastee-Freez. Supposedly, it was never part of the chain and changed its name to Hasty when it was confronted by Tastee-Freez. I find it more likely that it was originally a Tastee-Freez and simply changed names later. The neon cone flashes on and off at night. There is another Hasty Freez sign in nearby Lebanon, OR.

Drive-in
Colorado Springs, CO
BJ's Velvet Freez
Colorado Springs, CO

The Drive-in is a former Tastee-Freez from the 1950s. For more, see this website.

BJ's Velvet Freez opened as a Tastee-Freez in 1954. For more, see this website.

Magic Wand Drive-in
Churubusco, IN

It appears that the Magic Wand Drive-in was originally a Tastee-Freez. Either that, or it copied their building style significantly. It has been the Magic Wand for many, many years. This drive-in had car hops at one time.

Sherald's Burger Bar
Price, UT
Fros-T-Treat
Hot Springs, AR

Sherald's Burger Bar is another former Tastee-Freez. It has been Sherald's since at least the late 1960s.

The Fros-T-Treat is probably a former Tastee-Freez. I believe it has been Frost-T-Treat since 1988.

DB's Drive-in
Weedsport, NY
DB's Drive-in started out as a Tastee-Freez around the mid-1950s. The building retains the plastic diamond pattern around the roof and blue glazed brick.

Frosty Boy K
Knightstown, IN
Frosty Boy K is another former Tastee-Freez with the blue brick and plastic diamonds. This place was known as Tastee Cream in the 1970s. I don't know when it became Frosty Boy K. Evidently, this stand is or was connected with the Pizza King and Frosty Boy chains. For more, see these websites: 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5.

Boz Hot Dogs
Griffith, IN
This Boz Hot Dogs stand must have been a Tastee-Freez originally. The Boz Hot Dogs chain was founded in 1969. There is another old location in Hazel Crest, IL.

Tastee-Freez
Hillsville, VA

This Hillsville Tastee-Freez has intact diamond signage. I don't know if the building ever had blue brick.

Tastee-Freez
Chicago, IL

RJ's Place is another former Tastee-Freez. The diamond pattern survives but the red stripes appear to have been painted brown. [photo thanks Robby Delius]

The North Aurora Tastee-Freez opened in 1967 and this sign is probably from then. The building suffered a major fire in 2003 and was remodeled. The stand was vacant in 2006 and later was used as a martial arts studio. When this photo was taken in 2009, the building was vacant. As far as I know, this is the only sign of its kind still on display.

The Chicago Tastee-Freez features another old plastic sign. I believe this stand has been here since 1951.

former Tastee-Freez
Goldsboro, NC
former Tastee-Freez
Midlothian, IL

The former Goldsboro Tastee-Freez is an example of the company's sawtooth roof style building. This location is now known as the Sof-T-Shop.

This Midlothian Tastee-Freez seemed to be closed when this photo was taken in 2009. Apparently, the front of the building, where the walk-up window was, has been filled in.

Tastee-Freez
Chilhowie, VA

This Chilhowie Tastee-Freez still retains some of its plastic signage.
