Michael's Frozen Custard's three locations occupy former abandoned gas stations. The first location on Monroe St. opened in 1986. The Verona store opened in 1987 and the Atwood in 1989. A fourth location on Schroeder Rd. in Madison opened in 1995. Michael's Frozen Custard is now available wholesale and on the internet. For more, see these websites: 1, 2, and 3.

Windmill Ice Cream Shoppe
Heafford Junction, WI

The Windmill Ice Cream Shoppe started out as a Sinclair gas station built in the mid-1940s. The gas station didn't last long and the building was used as a burger joint. In the 1950s, it was known as Mrs. Magnus's Dutch Mill which sold candy and gifts. The Windmill Ice Cream Shoppe opened in the early 1990s. For more, see their website.

Herschleb's
Wisconsin Rapids, WI

Herschleb's was founded in 1939 as the Herschleb Ice Cream Co. This building housed their manufcturing plant and restaurant. They were closed in 2007 and the building was for sale.

Boy Blue
Milwaukee, WI

Boy Blue is/was part of the "Boy Blue of America" chain founded in 1970. This is the only stand that I have seen. Does anyone know of others with this old building and/or interesting signs? The focus of the stand is on soft-serve ice cream. For more, see this website.
