This giant roll of Pep-O-Mint Life Savers was installed here in 1987 to honor Edward John Noble. Noble was born in Gouverneur and co-founded the Life Savers company. He also invented this round, tin foil wrapper design. This sculpture was one of five which were originally installed in Port Chester, NY at the Life Savers' manufacturing plant. The building was constructed in 1920 and it sounds like these giant rolls were there from the beginning. The plant closed in 1985 and the giant rolls were removed. I don't know what happened to the other four. For more, see these websites: 1, 2, 3, and 4. |
