This carved wooden man is located at Granny's Closet, a restaurant located on old Route 66. He is known as "Little Louie" and has been there since at least 1973. The 10 foot tall statue was completely restored in 2009. It even has its own display platform now. The statue is a tribute to the two Muffler Men that were here in the 1960s when the place was known as the Lumberjack Café. For more, see this website.
These two Muffler Men were originally installed at the Lumberjack Café. When the restaurant became Granny's Closet in 1973, these statues were moved to Northern Arizona University and repainted in NAU colors. The statue that stands just outside the Skydome is known as "Louie". It is believed that this statue is from 1962 and was the first Muffler Man ever produced. It was originally built by Prewitt Fiberglass Animals for someone in Sacramento that never paid for it. The Lumberjack Cafe bought the other Muffler Man a few years later. This one is now installed inside the Skydome. It has a Cowboy style body but a Bunyan style head. The NAU football team is known as The Lumberjacks. For more, see these websites: 1 and 2. | This Lumberjack Building Materials Man has shortened legs and recreated boots. He probably had to leave his original feet behind during a move. Many Muffler Man are cemented in place for stability. This Muffler Man also has some damage to his right eye. These photos are from 2006. In 2007, he was moved to private property where he is part of a front yard collection of fiberglass statues. This Tucson Man has been here since around 1964. These photos were taken in 2004. In 2009, the statue's axe was stolen. It has since been either reclaimed or replaced. The statue is or was dressed as Santa for the Christmas holiday season with a candy cane temporarily replacing the axe. In 2011, the statue was repainted. For more, see this website.
