| Stage Center was designed by John M. Johansen and built 1965-1970. It was originally known as the "Mummers Theater" and was also called the "Oklahoma Theater Center". It consists of three concrete structures connected by ramps: two theaters and a smaller unit used for a cabaret, offices, and rehearsal space. The award-winning complex has been praised and mocked for its "tinker toy geometry". Stage Center closed in 1986. It was renovated and reopened in 1992. The cylindrical University Club Tower was built in 1966 and, with 32 floors, is the tallest residential high-rise in Tulsa. It is also used for office space. For more, see these websites: 1 and 2.
The Abundant Life Building, aka the Diamond Tower, was built in 1957. It was originally Oral Roberts' headquarters. The windowless building was used by Southwestern Bell when Oral Roberts moved out in the 1970s. It has been vacant since the mid-1980s. Around 1997, David Horton Ministries took over the building but the seller claims he was never paid for it. The building has been in limbo since then. For more, see these websites: 1, 2, 3, and 4. |
