Rapid Shoe Fix
Ypsilanti, MI

Ypsi-Arbor Lanes also opened in 1963 and features 40 lanes and this incredible, huge sign. For more, see these websites: 1 and 2. [night photo thanks Mark Comstock]

Terry Bakery features this great, still-functioning neon sign. The bakery has been around since 1865.

The Great Lakes Skate Center burned down in early 2007 and this sign probably won't be around much longer. The sign looks like it might have had neon at one time. For more, see this website. [photo thanks Mark Comstock]

Rapid Shoe Fix features a great metal sign. The figures resemble Palmer Cox's Brownies.

Tap Room
Ypsilanti, MI
City Body
Ypsilanti, MI

The Tap Room has live music (mostly blues and jazz) and karaoke nights. It opened in 1941 and was renovated in 1994. For more, see these websites: 1 and 2.

City Body has been offering collision repairs at this location since 1930. I believe these signs are modern - but still nice! For more, see these websites: 1, 2, and 3. [photos thanks Mark Comstock]

Cadet Motor Inn
Coldwater, MI
Miller's Shoes
Jackson, MI
Vic Canever Chevrolet
Fenton, MI

The Cadet Motor Inn opened in 1967 as a ten-unit motel. There are now 32 rooms. The sign was restored in 1997 and, as of 2005, is about to be repainted again. For more, see these websites: 1 and 2.

Miller's Shoes has a classic metal and neon shoe sign.

This Vic Canever Chevrolet sign was originally installed at a Chevrolet manufacturing plant in Flint, MI in the early 1930s. It was taken down in 1986 during reorganization by General Motors. The double-paneled, neon sign was then restored and reinstalled here.

Capitol Fur Co.
Lansing, MI
Holiday Lanes
Lansing, MI

Capitol Fur Co. has been around since 1922. The name is a reference to Lansing as Michigan's state capitol.

The Holiday Lanes has 40 lanes and features great mid-century architecture as well as this great sign. The sparrows were actively nest-building in the concrete screen wall when I was there. For more, see these websites: this website.

Huron Camera
Battle Creek, MI
Ritzee Hamburgers
Battle Creek, MI

In 2005, Huron Camera became the Image Gallery. The camera's lens cover was changed at that time to reflect the new name. For more, see these websites: 1 and 2.

Ritzee Hamburgers was part of a chain with several locations in Battle Creek. I'm not sure how widespread the chain was but there was also a Ritzee Hamburgs in Grand Rapids, MI. This building looks nothing like the original in Battle Creek from 1941. [scan thanks Rick Rann] For more, see this website.

Stardust Lanes
Saginaw, MI
State Lanes
Saginaw, MI
Aubry Cleaners
Saginaw, MI
Bean Bunny
Saginaw, MI

The Stardust Lanes, probably from the 1950s, owes its name and sign's inspiration to Las Vegas' Stardust Hotel's old signage. For more, see their website.

The State Lanes is another hold-out on a busy commercial strip.

Aubry Cleaners is gone but the non-working, neon sign will remain hanging. The building was renovated in 2004 and became home to AKT Peerless Environmental Services with three apartments above.

The Bean Bunny neon sign was built in 1947. It is 35' tall, 50' wide, with 12' tall letters. The sign is mounted on the Klein-Berger grain elevator. The giant pink jackrabbit was the symbol of the Michigan Bean Company's Jack Rabbit Beans. The sign had been dark since 1985 and was relit in 1997. In 2006, the building was sold and the new owner says that the sign will stay. For more, see this website.
